What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is a crime. It is violent, abusive or intimidating behaviour by a person, the offender, to control or dominate another person, the victim. For example:

a. financial abuse or control
b. verbal abuse
c. verbal threats or threatening gestures
d. sexual abuse
e. physical abuse
f. threats to person/s with whom you have a domestic relationship
g. threats to your property or pet

The victim must be, or have been, in a domestic relationship with the offender. For  example:

a. a husband/wife or ex-husband/wife
b. a partner or ex-partner
c. a boyfriend/girlfriend or ex-boyfriend/girlfriend
d. a brother or sister
e. a current or prior-in law
f. a parent or child
g. a current carer or prior personal carer

 

 Actual physical bodily harm is not necessary to establish the crime of domestic violence.
